day seventeen
agenda: Travel from Bryce Canyon, UT to Zion, UT
distance: 210 miles
travel time: 3.5 hours
The road to Zion was a lot dryer than Bryce. You enter the canyon from above and drive down to the base. This snapshot was taken from the road on our descent. Along the route, we went through a 1.2 mile tunnel bored into the wall. It was dark and long.
We got to take a quick hike along the river which runs through the canyon. Here is a view.
More from the river view hike.
A self portrait, albeit an unfortunate one. I got too close to a sticky plant and I wound up getting stuck to Cindy here. Luckily a park ranger had some solvent to unstick me.
There is supposedly a ghost which lurks in Zion park. It takes the form of the last person who crossed its path. Boo!
Sun down in the canyon.
Water runs down the canyon side and makes plant growth in unlikely places possible. Here is shot of one of the wet walls.
Cindy took a fancy to one of the plants growing on the wall. Here she is with the fancy plant.
After a dry and temprate evening, we got a beautiful day. We took a hike called the Emerald Pool trail. To get to the trails, you have to take a tram. The traffic is very restricted in the park. Once we got off the tram, we took a shot from trail. You can see the Virgin River which can flash flood and helps to form the beuatiful rock formations over the course of millions of years.
A better self portrait of us in Zion. I learned my lesson from the night before and did not smell any flowers and have this great picture for my will power.
Canadian mountees were patrolling the park. We couldn't figure out why?
Oh puh-leese.
Our hike on the Emerald Pool trail took us to the base of this sheer wall. The faces were very flat and looked almost as if they were pieces of wood.
Another shot of the face.
At the end of the hike, this is the treat you get. A pool of water, green by way of algae. That's me standing infront of the pool as the mountain towers above me. All kidding aside, this was a religious experience for me.
Here is a picture in the other direction, back out over the canyon. I had to chain Cindy in place to take this picture, but I think she's glad I did!
