post-roadtrip fun trip
agenda: Long Beach, CA to Avalon, Catalina Island
Distance: 57 miles off shore
Travel time: 1 hour by high speed boat
After about an hour on a high speed boat with a tour group of giggly, picture happy, Vietnamese couples, we arrived at Avalon a small beach town on the east side of the island. There are bars, bike rentals and lots of tourists. We opted for some quieter areas of the island and trekked inland towards the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical Gardens. Here I am standing next to a dragon tree.
Cindy liked these succulents from Africa called Red Hot Pokers. Cindy! Watch out!!
Prickley Pear cacti...yum!
Prickley Pear cacti....ouch!
We also enjoyed these cacti called little nipple. (And you thought this was a g-rated site?)
Here is a slightly older and hairer little nipple.
The island is very limited in terms of space. The island has highly restrictive traffic rules and the majority of the traffic is either bike or golf carts. Houses are also very small and there isn't much land zoned for residential life. It's so tight that towards the top of this big cactus, you can see a woodpecker crafting a new home. We heard the land cost him only 300K.
At the end of the gardens, the tomb of Mr. Wrigley can be found. Here is a self portrait of us with the Catalina Channel in the background.
A slightly better lit picture of me from the same tower contemplating how many high places there are in the US and whether or not I will be visiting them all.
