On the radio
(donna summer fans out there??)
Just a quick note of praise for someone who I think is not widely known, but has one of the sharpest sports mind and a good helping of wit. I speak of Mr. Colin Cowherd from ESPN Radio's The Herd. Typically nationally syndicated sports programs are so diluted that you never get to hear about your team or the minutiae of what happened to the [superstar/manager/owner/girlfriend/family/other] on/of your favorite sports team. That's not what Colin is about....nooooo....He keeps it real.
Colin is my commute buddy. He's the guy with the newspaper next to you on the train that got up way earlier, read the whole paper, but will flip through it and ask with surprise,"Whoa? Did you see this story." And then proceed to tell you all about it.
He tells me all I need to know from sports to other off beat news (e.g. 'Chicken Little' mishaps). And his insights and analogies on life are amazing. For instance here is his take on the whole Philadelphia Eagles and Terrell Owens spat.
"I compare the Eagles' relationship with Terrell Owens to one with a stripper. You know it's going to be short-term. Right now, they're at a breaking point, so the Eagles will do the only thing they can, cut ties."
Say what you will, Colin Cowherd is one of my personal heroes.
That being said, I should probably figure out who my other heroes are for reference or at least a sense of relativism. I'll get on that...
