Well we're moving on up

Finally received the furniture. It turns out the way the moving companies take advantage of their volume is by loading a truck with multiple folks and sending it cross country. Unfortunately, the other folks on our truck did not close on their house as expected and wound up delaying us several days. Overall though, I was very happy with the movers. The key, I think, was making sure you pack as much as possible on your own. Folks who complained were probably lazy and did not properly pack and did not properly arrange drop off. Each flight of stairs is an extra $75 bucks. Each extra 50 feet of carrying distance from the truck to the stairs is worth an additional $75 bucks as well.

Upon unpacking and shopping for new items, there were several common household things that we packed that we could have more easily replaced on the other side. Here are some items you should consider carefully when packing and moving as it may be cheaper get new ones at your new location.

Item: Dish set, service for 4
Cost to move (CTM): Half a box plus bubble wrapping
Cost to replace (CTR): $8.99 at Target

Item: Drinking glasses
CTM: Full box plus bubble wrapping
CTR: $12.99 at Target

Item: Sweaters
CTM: 8 in a box
CTR: $7.99 at Sporting Goods Store

DSL equipment is generally provided with your new DSL service. In other words, you don't need to bring your old DSL modem or filters as they will not be supported by your new provider. It may work, but why bring it along if it will be taking up space and giving you more heartache.

As for the moving in and stuff. We have settled some of our rooms. Here are some pictures:

And here is a picture of my failed attempts at growing a beard:

All in all moving in is going alright. I think the key has been to try and focus on one or two things and get them done. Making lists is of the utmost importance to cut down on the number of times you head out to stores. I'll be much happier when I get the remaining boxes out of the way. Looking at crumpled brown paper boxes gets a bit old after a while. Fortunately we have been able to cook and relax a bit on the couch. Small comforts but very necessary.
